DIY Silicone Reapplication for Lowboy Tanks
Topic: Reapply Silicone
When I purchased these (NEW) Lowboy tanks, they were all boxed up. Once unboxed, I felt the silicone job wasn’t up to my standards—it was paper-thin. I personally couldn’t trust the manufacturer's work and decided to take action.
I tested the tanks in my garage before removing the silicone. While they held water, I kept wondering—how long would they last? A year? Five years? My unease pushed me to scrape off the old silicone and reapply it myself.
The middle picture highlights just how thin the original bead was. I replaced it with a much thicker bead, about 1/4" to 3/8", and applied a robust patch at all three-point mating surfaces. Now, I have peace of mind knowing the seals are strong and built to last.
